Calling all Sassenachs, prepare to step ashore and straight into the world of Outlander. We’ll embark on the ultimate journey through some of Scotland’s stunning filming locations—get ready to be swept into the romance, intrigue, and history that brought this incredible story to life.
Your adventure begins in the picturesque village of Culross, transformed into Cranesmuir for the series. Wander its cobblestone streets and immerse yourself in 17th-century life as you pass by the Mercat Cross—the haunting backdrop to Geillis Duncan’s most dramatic scenes. (Note: Entrance to Culross Palace is optional and not included.)
From there, it’s on to Doune Castle, the magnificent fortress that served as Castle Leoch, seat of Clan MacKenzie. With entry included, you’ll get a chance to explore the towering stone walls, grand halls, and atmospheric interiors that echo tales of history and Outlander adventure. We highly recommend the audio guide, which features Outlander-specific insights narrated by Sam Heughan himself—a treat for every fan!
After a lunch break to recharge, we continue to Blackness Castle, famously known as the “Ship That Never Sailed” for its striking, ship-like shape. This fortress became Black Jack Randall’s imposing Fort William in the series—a powerful, chilling location steeped in history.
The day wouldn’t be complete without a final stop at Midhope Castle, beloved by fans as Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s cherished family home. With its rugged, timeless charm, Midhope offers the perfect ending to our Outlander journey (site access is dependent on availability).
So, lace up your boots, charge your cameras, and get ready for an unforgettable day ashore reliving Outlander’s greatest scenes in the heart of Scotland!

For any shore excursion in Scotland, preparation is key to enjoying your adventure comfortably. Our weather is famously changeable, so checking the forecast and dressing in layers is essential:
Light base layer
Sweater or fleece
Waterproof jacket
Comfortable shoes are also a must, as many destinations feature cobbled streets, rugged trails, or castle grounds that require footwear capable of handling different types of uneven surface.
While many places accept cards, having a bit of cash on hand can be helpful.
A small backpack is useful for carrying essentials like snacks, extra clothing, and any souvenirs you may pick up along the way.
Finally, don’t forget to bring a camera or smartphone to capture all those sights on your excursion with us!
